Koen De Koninck studied at the Rits filmschool in Brussels. After his second year, he got the chance to be a trainee on the animated feature film The Secret of Kells at Walking the Dog in Brussels. With his graduation short film Opgejut Koen won a couple awards in 2009. After his studies he worked on a 3D animated pilot for a children series and the video clip for the song You look familiar by Team William.
This is my first year as a professional.
My graduation film Opgejut won the prize of best animated short film at the International short film festival Leuven and the third prize at the Holland animation film festival.
As a kid I grew up with all the cool animated features: Disney, Bluth, Pixar,…I was also in love with the Hollywood cartoons of the forties like Tom and Jerry, Tex Avery and the Warner Brothers cartoons. So I was always interested in animation. When I found out after high school, that there were a few animation courses I could follow, I knew: I got to try this!
It’s the classical 2D animation curriculum in my school, and every 2D student makes his movies.
If it’s 2D animation: yes. I also work with After Effects for cut-out, compositing and motion graphics.

Everything 2D classical animated.
Peg system, onion skinning and auto light table functions, the ability to rotate your drawings like a real light table and the effects modules.
With the good line quality of the drawing tools, precise in-betweens with the onion skin function and the cool effect modules, I try to give my work a sense of classical animated quality. I’m not a big fan of the ‘flash’ look. Old school looks for the win!
I learned bits and pieces on school, but I learned the most by just making short films. It took a while before I really got a hang of the software, but that’s because I didn’t read the whole manual first. Good advice: read the manual first, animate last!
It’s the best 2D software for animators available.
Any studio that has a passion for character animation.
I work on a PC with a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet
