In my professional life, working as an animator on high profile feature films such as Garfield 2, Blades of Glory, Tropic Thunder and Twilight. In terms of personal projects, creating the Bye-Bye! First short film and taking it further into development and producing its animated series.
Yes, only Toon Boom Animate.
We write the stories based on previous brainstorming sessions, then move on to writing the screenplays and finessing them until they are great. From there we create storyboards at the same time we are in the recording sessions with the voice actors. This way the storyboards are built in editorial with a crisper and tighter timing/pacing.
Once we have the above material, we move forward with Toon Boom Animate and start blocking out the scenes, create additional characters and backgrounds to support the story.
Finally, we render everything out of Toon Boom Animate and proceed to add Sound FX and final editing.
Mimo Films is a computer animation studio devoted to create a new generation of animated short films and animated feature films. Mimo Films develops memorable characters and heartwarming stories that appeal to audiences of all ages.
Cut out animation in combination with traditional animation. For other shows, we solely use 3D animation.
1. The Rotating view
2. The lip sync feature
3. The audio tracks and ability to break it down into separate character angles
4. The diversity of formats (HD, NTSC, WEB, etc)
5. The clean up process from the rough drawings, its fast!
We did experience productivity gains. Initially we were aiming for 3D animation on our mobile animated series, mainly because we wanted to keep the same animation technique between the feature film and the additional episodes. However, the idea of testing different techniques such as 2D cut out animation was in the back of our minds. We took Toon Boom Animate for a test drive and it was fantastic! Shortly after, we decided to create our first Bye-Bye! Season using Toon Boom Animate. The results and comments from our focus groups have been great, and we already have a finished product.
Absolutely, we have an efficient workflow on our animated series, although we are pretty new to Toon Boom Animate, we feel very confident and pleased with it as an animation platform for our products. It lets us bring our ideas from the screenplay to the screen in a record time.
For our other productions we use Maya, a 3D animation tool. While its process is similar to any other animation package, it relies on a bigger team and several production stages.
As for our 2D animation production we are very much in the same channel with Toon Boom. We are classical animators by heart and Toon Boom makes us feel at home.
Wonderful! Again, we are very pleased that it is built for classically trained animators. Its tools, workflow and output make it for us a one stop animation platform.
It was fairly good, since it has traditional tools like the X-Sheet, Inbetween, paint, etc., we were able to move around easily and in a satisfactory way. Other tools like lip-syncing took us a couple of trials to finally realize their potential. Understanding how they work and how the programmers at Toon Boom were organizing the process was one of our approaches to break down our animation production.
A big Thank you to the entire Toon Boom Team!
