Biography

I love all kinds of animation and have worked in about every kind of animated media during my career, including eighteen years as an Animation Director at Disney TV Animation. I am mostly involved with directing Children’s TV series of late.

For virtual studio‘s productions over the internet it’s really important to have a storyboard tool that you can trust. On Pom Pom and Friends we did 78 seven and a half minute episodes without any problem. It has been irreplaceable.

How long have you been in this profession?

Thirty five years

What are your most important accomplishments?

My latest show, Pom Pom and Friends http://pompomandfriends.blogspot.com/ but also my work at Disney, especially the Genies Great Minds series which I still love. History with the Toon Boom Professional Products: I adopted Storyboard Pro first but I am also an Animate user.

What kind of projects do you create storyboards for?

My focus is managing storyboards for International Children’s TV series

Do you create your animations using Toon Boom Professional Products only?

No, much of my work now is 3D series. If not, what other applications are you using? Maya

Why did you choose to combine these products?

The workflow for Storyboard Pro is excellent for productions where artists are literally spread all over the globe and must collaborate through the internet. We work with the storyboard artists we want anywhere, in large part because of Storyboard Pro.

Please describe your workflow

I use the xml output of script from Final Draft to build starter Storyboard Pro project files that I can post on FTP for our Storyboard artists and receive back a PDF file of their roughs after a week or so. I mark up my notes on the roughs in Acrobat and repost these. After another couple weeks, I get back the clean PDF and the Storyboard Pro project file. This makes final changes quickest.

What are your top five favorite features in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro:

The absolutely crucial feature for us is to be able to send receive and open the Storyboard Pro project files anywhere. This is what makes it possible to have storyboard artists in the US, Canada and Korea sharing work interchangeably.

Are you more efficient today compared to your production toolset used previously?

For virtual studio‘s productions over the internet it’s really important to have a storyboard tool that you can trust. On Pom Pom and Friends we did 78 seven and a half minute episodes without any problem. It has been irreplaceable. We are looking at the new features in the Storyboard Pro 3D now to see how we can integrate these into our workflow. One of the nice things about Storyboard Pro is our projects always opened on any system, our studio and outside artists use a mix of MAC and PC so this was really important for us. Most of our storyboard artists are old friends; it’s nice to have a tool like Storyboard Pro that lets you work with old friends half a world away. We also look at artist blogs and make a point to try new people too.

How was your leaning curve? Have you used the video tutorials?

The learning curve on Storyboard Pro is a quick start. You can start working right away with just a few hours study and then continue to learn time saving shortcuts when you are more at home in the program. The online resources and tech support were excellent.
