I used to draw all of my storyboards on paper and then scan them into my computer, but now Storyboard Pro works as an excellent medium for working digitally.

What are your most important accomplishments?

Graduating from art school

What kind of projects do you create storyboards for?

Short animation demos, music videos, comics

History with Toon Boom Storyboard Pro:

Do you create your storyboards using Toon Boom Storyboard Pro only?

No

If not, what other applications are you using?

Premiere Pro and Soundbooth

Why did you choose to combine these products?

I use the easy editing features in Premiere Pro to create cinematic transitions between scenes like cross fades. I use Soundbooth for more detailed editing of sound FX and music.

Please describe your workflow

When I first get an idea, I try to play out all of the major scenes and actions in my head. Then, I draw extremely sketchy thumbnails on paper. From here, I hop into Storyboard Pro and do all of the drawings digitally refining the thumbnails I created earlier. Once the drawings are complete, I space them out making sure the timing is correct. Next, I export a movie. I then begin to make a list of all of the sound FX needed, and I piece them together in Soundbooth to export an mp3 for the entire animatic. Last, I bring the mp3 back into Storyboard Pro or Premiere and export the full animatic movie with sound.

What are your top five favorite features in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro?

The Layers, The Pen library, The Timeline, Templates, Ability to add or subtract tools from the tool bar

What Toon Boom Storyboard Pro features allow you to distinguish your storyboards and animatics?

The pens you can create and have on deck are useful.

Did you experience any productivity gains in using Toon Boom Storyboard Pro?

Yes, I found it to be the most comfortable way to create digital storyboards.

Are you more efficient today compared to your production toolset used previously?

Yes. I used to draw all of my storyboards on paper and then scan them into my computer, but now Storyboard Pro works as an excellent medium for working digitally.

Is it possible to get the same results with other software?

Yes. Storyboards can be drawn in Flash and then laid out in the timeline. Also, scanned boards can be imported into an editing program and laid out on a timeline from there. However, these methods are not specialized for storyboarding. For example, I would have to rename each scene and panel. Storyboard Pro already does that for you.

How do you feel about Toon Boom Storyboard Pro?

I really admire how Toon Boom gears its products towards ANIMATION. To me, that makes it the undisputed tool to use. Storyboard Pro is perfect for making cool storyboards.

Equipment used:

  • Storyboard Pro
  • Premiere Pro
  • Soundbooth
  • I would also need a few stills to illustrate the text.
